A Short Film about Millwright Jon McGuinness and Warwick Bridge Corn Mill in Cumbria
Inside the World of Millwrights – A Work in Progress
I’m currently working on a new film exploring the craft of traditional millwrighting—one of those quietly heroic professions that keeps our heritage alive, one timber gear tooth at a time. This screengrab is from an interview I filmed with a lifelong millwright whose passion for mills began at the age of four and never let go.
The film delves into the essential role that wind and watermills once played at the heart of communities, and how these machines—powered entirely by nature—are being lovingly restored and maintained using centuries-old techniques. From stone dressing to casting iron wheels, it’s a world of intricate, hands-on skill and deep respect for the past.
As a filmmaker based in Newcastle, I’ve spent over 15 years documenting arts, heritage, and cultural projects across the North East and beyond. This project continues my interest in capturing the stories, voices, and traditions that often go overlooked but are vital to understanding where we come from.
