Katherine Jones Printmaker | Inside the Printmaking Process | Artist Documentary by Alan Fentiman

Katherine Jones Printmaker is a short documentary that explores the intuitive and hands-on world of printmaking through the eyes of a contemporary artist working with collagraphs—a versatile, texture-based printmaking technique.

Filmed and directed by Alan Fentiman, the film offers an intimate glimpse into the creative process as the artist experiments with mountboard, glue, carborundum grit, and layered colour.

From the unpredictable magic of inking and wiping plates to the use of à la poupée (multi-colour inking), this film highlights the trial, error, and instinct behind each print. Along the way, we see the evolution of a piece created for the DLI (Durham Light Infantry) Museum, inspired not by the medals themselves, but by their ribbons—translating symbolism into abstract form.

🎨 Topics covered:

– What is collagraph printmaking?

– Using carborundum grit to hold ink and add texture

– Why instinct and spontaneity often guide colour choice

– The role of proofs in developing a finished piece

– A behind-the-scenes look at a commission for the DLI Museum
